Using social media to bring guests to small hotels…

Today, since people are beginning to take advantage of our introductory free listings and signing on for a page in our directory, I deleted four of the placeholder hotels whose fan pages on Facebook I used to create this site. Since many fan pages are posted and not updated regularly I couldn’t vouch for their information.

One original placeholder listing remains as a shining example of a small hotel using social media to engage former and future guests.

Scarborough Fair Bed & Breakfast

Barry, the innkeeper and owner of Scarborough Fair, is using Facebook and other social media to get the word out about his Baltimore, Maryland Bed & Breakfast.

He posts home-cooked breakfast updates on his Facebook news feed:

Scarborough Fair Bed & Breakfast Today: Apricot Mango Raspberry Honey Oat Waffles wi/ fresh strawberries, blue berries and bananas on top & warm REAL maple syrup! & BACON!!

Scarborough Fair Bed & Breakfast Today: Stratta of Egg, fresh zucchini, orange peppers, baby tomatoes, sauteed shallots and a hint of garlic, pumpernickle and boule breads with bubbling Italian and feta cheeses. Holy Yummmm!

And promotes specials on Twitter:

With reviews like these AND a savings of $50, why wouldn’t you want to get away? http://bsfurl.com/1gtp

One Week ONLY! Save $50 off your trip to… http://bit.ly/bNeI5d

As a new fan of Barry’s Facebook page and waking up to his breakfast menu most days, I’d beat a path to his B & B if I were anywhere near Baltimore.

Smallhotels.com gives small hotels an opportunity to invite guests to subscribe to their blogs, websites and social media pages but it’s important that hotels provide a dynamic, up-to-date and friendly cyber-welcome.

Are you doing this successfully? Not sure about what to do with that fan page now that it’s out there?

You’re not alone!

Small hotel proprietors: Use this thread to discuss using social media to bring guests to your small hotel.

We have a website, a blog, a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account – now it’s time to add content to our pages. We invite proprietors of small hotels, bed & breakfasts, inns, guesthouses and hostels to add a free listing to our directory of small hotels.

This is a chance to list your hotel, contact info, website and social media links on a site that’s dedicated to small hotels and the people who patronize them.

We realize the value of unique, intimate and independent lodging options and hope to build a community of small hotels that entices travelers to their doors.

If you are the proprietor of a small hotel, visit smallhotels.com to add your listing. If you know the owner of a small hotel or have stayed somewhere that should be included in our directory, please pass this invitation along.

Many thanks,
Jane

We’ll leave the lights on for you…
